According to some posts here it will only play dvds from other regions — but why should that be so? Has anyone tried a Region 1 blu-ray in a hacked region 4 player? Because region coding for DVD is handled separately to Blu-ray. I think – but don't quote me on this – I have not done the research – but I reacall that there was a court case where the region coding on DVDs was challenged as being anti-competitive.
Comodo Serial Cracks there. The court decided it was and ruled that all new DVD players had to be sold with the ability to bypass the region coding. In fact IMHO region coding is a simply ploy to earn more $$ and that DVDs were and BDs are rediculously overpriced. That also goes for CDs. If Naxos can sell every CD in their cataloge for $10 that tells me a lot about CD prices. Coming back from my rant – From memory the court ruling only applied to DVDs so that even though in principle BD players should also be able to be unlocked it will probnably require a new High Court judgement.
I have taken this up with the ACCC and here is the definitive answer on disc regions. The ACCC did go to court in a case brought by Sony against a modifier of Playstations. Sony appealed and won. It is illegal to modify any player. However the ACCC had a sort of moral victory and we were able to buy all-region dvd players from that point on.
