Having sort of moved from XP Pro to Windows 10, I am in the process of installing older stuff that I am hoping to keep using. At this stage, I have established from Canon that there is no plan for new drivers for the CanoScan 8400F driver. Instead, Canon suggests to use the Windows 7 driver (with qualifications at Canon about issues they do not know of as yet; to be sure to be sure). When I run the setup program, there is no reaction whatsoever, for instance about a preferred installation directory, instead, the next thing I get is a message saying it may not work.

Then offering options of deeming it installed, or doing something that then clearly involves XP Pro SP3 material. For now, I did not take notes on the details in this regard. This puts up the expected dialogue, the ToolBox, I can even issue a scan command to have the further form displayed.

However, trying to scan then says it cannot open the Twain Source. Is there someone out there who can shed some light on this. Surely I am not the only one who wants to avoid throwing out perfectly well working hardware - not more than I had to already anyway. Drivers Mpx En5038a Winxp. The last update released was for Win 7, I downloaded 5200F Scanner Driver Ver. 10.1.6.0a_64 (Windows 7 x64/Vista64), CanoScan Toolbox Ver. 4.9.3.2 (Windows 7/7 x64/Vista/Vista64/XP/2000/Me/98) and incase I need to uninstall DelDrv Ver. 2.4.64.0 (Windows 7 x64/Vista64/XP x64).

I'm using Win 10 Pro (upgrading from Win 8.1 pro to Win 10, I chose to not keep any and install only Win 10) before using Win Compatibility Troubleshooter I created a manual restore point. Run compatibility mode (compatibility Win XP SP3). For the scanner driver it copied the info to CanoScan folder (this is a hidden folder and you need to change the view option) in root directory. Before connecting the scanner, restart the computer, connect the scanner and completed the installation, Twain_32 folder now have the TWAIN file for the scanner (folder name is CNQ5200) Test the scanner using Toolbox 4.9 and it seems to be work at this stage:-), honestly I have not use the scanner a lot but seems to work with the new OS. The good thing with Win 10 (same with Win 8 or Win 7) you can run early program in compatibility mode to test or determine if suitable, but still you need to be aware of other things that may cause the program not to run or install correctly (example: utility software that may block it).

Hi RJ, Thank you for your input. If the numbering is anything to go by, then your 5200F may be older than the 8400F. Not sure, but if it were, then surely I ought to get mine going as well. However, having tried Compatibility mode, I get no further. Along the way, there is no scanner to select; or else at some point it says it cannot oben the TWAIN source.

And I remember having big-time issues with Twain sources before. What I might do next is obtain the drivers again, maybe following your lead. If all else fails, I will consider what Linney said in his input, and get VueScan. Even though I reckon that is quite expensive. I can nearly by a new multifunction unit for that money. Quite simply this is a 64 bit Driver Issue - I tore my hair out for 2 hours trying various ideas found in forums - no response from the scanner using the new 64 bit Win 10 machine when installing from the original CD ROM - the old 32 bit Windows 10 machine which I had upgraded from Win 7 32 bit had the 8400F working perfectly with Installation from the original CD ROM. However nothing from the new 64 bit Win 10 machine.
